Greenville, NC, USA, 2021-22
Haddad|Drugan has been working on the Emerald Loop Vision Plan since 2019. The plan envisions several multi-site art initiatives to incite activation and connectivity in the Center City, including right-of-way paving murals, architectural lighting, and an art trolley. Two of six planned thermoplastic intersection murals have been installed, with the others forthcoming as the city implements other streetscape improvements. The hexagonal thermoplastic material used in the murals was selected due to its durability, affordability, and conceptual reference to the crystalline structure of emeralds, the moniker of the art plan. All six murals share a palette of greens. The murals enliven the streetscape, calm traffic, and create a burst of art announcing Downtown and the other Emerald Loop projects in planning.
The intersection artworks, Asteria and Radiance, were commissioned by Pitt County Arts Council and installed by Cactx Surfaces.
